Heavy Psychedelic Bass-Driven Doom from Mexico City, Mexico.
Oozing with sludgy basslines and tribal drum beats, Mexico City's Oculto drag you into the dark, doomy abyss with "Penumbra." Heavy with occult themes, this fuzzy, psychedelic trip is a down tempo, cryptic narrative of existential dread and celebration of the macabre.
Band Statement:
After the band's first rehearsals and we realized that there was chemistry between the two, we proposed some names and Oculto was the one that best represented the concept of the project.
We met at a show where we both played with other bands that we had at that time. I approached Gerson because he was wearing a shirt from a band that I had discovered at that time. We began to talk about putting together this project.
We find this to be a very distinctive and recognizable sound, as the tone and fuzz of the bass with the drum tops are very distinctive. We tried from the beginning for it to be a raw, heavy, muddy and thick sound.
The main theme of the first album "Chaos, cosmos and cataclysms" is about the dark matter that exists in the universe and how it affects the planet and humans, the transmutation of the soul and thought is a recurring theme on the first album, We touch on themes of the cosmos, the universe and the planets.
On the second album "Penumbra" the main theme is the darkness in the human being and nature, we composed this album in the midst of a pandemic and we felt that all humanity was in the dark, a Penumbra covered the entire planet and from there it was born this record, we also talk about gloomy, satanic and funeral themes.
Mal de Ojo (The evil eye) is the name for the new album, comes from the popular expression about the curse that someone can put on another person just by looking at them. We as a band believe that we live in a curse from humanity which overshadows us with envy, hatred, greed, we wanted to focus the themes of this new album towards sounds and places that we had not experienced yet, alluding to the evil eye in life itself. We recorded the album in the same studio, unlike the previous ones, this one was recorded on magnetic tape which by nature gives it a different flavor.
Living in Mexico City makes you see and experience surreal situations of all kinds, what inspires us are all the things we experience every day, positive and negative things, composing and playing music is one of the activities we love the most in the life, it takes us to a place that can only be reached by playing in a band, it is very healing to play our music and we have a lot of respect for what we do.
We have 5 or 6 totally new songs that will make up the new album, we've played them live a couple of times, we want to go into the studio this year to record them and continue playing them, it's also on the horizon to do a split with two excellent bands, we hope that everything comes out this year.
